Do People Care About Spirit Week?

September 29, 2023                                                          Elias Lemrini | Staff Writer

From Sept. 18, 2023, to Sept. 19, 2023, Westlake Charter High School celebrated Spirit Week. Spirit Week is when each day, students are encouraged to dress to match a certain theme to show school spirit. For example, Teacher-Student Swap Day, where students dress up as teachers and teachers dress up as students. These events happen in Westlake Charter High School to build school spirit before major events like Homecoming.

I’ve asked a variety of people if they care about Spirit Week, from students to teachers. I’m interviewing Mellaney, Mr. Lennan, Shope, Nia, and Noah, on what they think about Spirit Week.

Mellaney is a student of Westlake Charter High School who has an advisory with Lehman. “I think it is important because we get to express ourselves with the spirit week themes. It's fun to see the creative outfits of other people.” Mellaney states if she has the clothes for it, she will wear an outfit for Spirit Week.

Mr. Lennan is a teacher at Westlake Charter High School who teaches journalism and U.S. History. Here's what he says about Spirit Week: “I care about Spirit Week, I think it's important to build a strong culture of school spirit and I want my advisory class to win that pizza party. He says he plans to dress up for the whole Spirit Week.

Shope is a student at Westlake Charter High School who has an advisory with Ms. Lehman. Shope stated, “It helps us all engage and be together, it's also nice to see people come in different ways than I normally see each other.” Shope wants to be involved in Spirit Week and plans to wear a beard for a Spirit Week-related day.

Nia is a high school student of Westlake Charter High School who has Ms. Lehman as a class. Nian said, “Yes, because it can bring the school together to show our inner explorer” When I asked Nia if she planned to wear things for Spirit Week, she said, “Yes, because I'm not boring like other people.”

Noah is a student of Westlake Charter High School and has recently been elected as 9th Grade Representative and has Ms. Lehman as his advisor, let’s hear what he has to say: “I think it's important for students to engage in school spirit to be engaged, I think for our next Spirit Week we need to make it bigger and make people more participated in it, like under the sea or a jungle thing.” He says he doesn’t have a lot of outfits, but if he finds something he will wear it.

In conclusion, it turns out that a lot of people care about Spirit Week. This surprised me because I thought not a lot of people cared. One thing that I wanted to note is that teachers are the most likely people to be wearing something for Spirit Week.
